چکیده

In this paper we address the statistics of second-order relations of feature vectors derived from image sequences. We compute the individual vector components corresponding to the visual modalities orientation, contrast transition, optic flow, and colour by conventional low-level early vision algorithms. As a main result, we observe that collinear (or parallel) line pairs are, with very great likelihood, also associated with other identical features, for example sharing the same flow pattern, or colour or even sharing multiple feature combinations. It is known that low level processes, such as edge detection, optic flow estimation and stereo are ambiguous. Our results provide support for the assumption that the ambiguity of low level processes can be substantially reduced by integrating information across visual modalities. Furthermore, the attempt to model the application of Gestalt laws in computer vision systems based on statistical measurements, as suggested recently by some researchers (Krüger N 1998 Neural Process. Lett. 8 117-29; Elder H and Goldberg R M 1998 Perception Suppl. 27 11; Sigman M, Cecchi G A, Gilbert C D and Magnasco M O 200.1 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 98 1935-49; Geisler W S, Perry J S, Super B J and Gallogly D P 2002 Vis. Res. 41 711-24), gets further support and the results in this paper suggest formulation of Gestalt principles in artificial vision systems in a multi-modal way.

Pseudo Zernike Moment-based Multi-frame Super Resolution

The goal of multi-frame Super Resolution (SR) is to fuse multiple Low Resolution (LR) images to produce one High Resolution (HR) image. The major challenge of classic SR approaches is accurate motion estimation between the frames. To handle this challenge, fuzzy motion estimation method has been proposed that replaces value of each pixel using the weighted averaging all its neighboring pixels i...

Mutual Information for Multi-modal, Discontinuity-Preserving Image Registration

Multi-sensory data fusion and medical image analysis often pose the challenging task of aligning dense, non-rigid and multi-modal images. However, optical sequences may also present illumination variations and noise. The above problems can be addressed by an invariant similarity measure, such as mutual information. However, in a variational setting convex formulations are generally recommended ...

Damage detection of multi-girder bridge superstructure based on the modal strain approaches

The research described in this paper focuses on the application of modal strain techniques on a multi-girder bridge superstructure with the objectives of identifying the presence of damage and detecting false damage diagnosis for such structures. The case study is a one-third scale model of a slab-on-girder composite bridge superstructure, comprised of a steel-free concrete deck with FRP rebars...

Comparison of Point and Line Features and Their Combination for Rigid Body Motion Estimation

This paper discusses the usage of different image features and their combination in the context of estimating the motion of rigid bodies (RBM estimation). From stereo image sequences, we extract line features at local edges (coded in so called multi-modal primitives) as well as point features (by means of SIFT descriptors). All features are then matched across stereo and time, and we use these ...

Dynamic Gesture Recognition with a Terahertz Radar Based on Range Profile Sequences and Doppler Signatures

The frequency of terahertz radar ranges from 0.1 THz to 10 THz, which is higher than that of microwaves. Multi-modal signals, including high-resolution range profile (HRRP) and Doppler signatures, can be acquired by the terahertz radar system. These two kinds of information are commonly used in automatic target recognition; however, dynamic gesture recognition is rarely discussed in the teraher...
